Mental Health & Dry Eye Syndrome

A new study looked at a large population of individuals age 18 and older who also had anxiety and/or depression. It found a significant association between these diagnoses and dry eye. So if you have anxiety and/or depression and have uncomfortable eyes that get red, tear and burn, you probably have dry eyes and should come in to have them assessed and treated.

This retrospective, case-control study of a large population including patients age 18 and older demonstrated a significant association between the diagnoses of dry eye and anxiety and/or depression.

The authors suggest that both eye care and primary care providers should be aware of the association between dry eye and anxiety/depression, as well as consider these potential comorbidities when addressing dry eye complaints.
